Originally devised in Tokyo, Pecha Kucha is a presentation format where 20 images are shown for 20 seconds each. The Design Museum in London organized a similar event, for the awards of the Designs of the Year 2013. Several nominees showcased their work, among them Barbas Lopes Arquitectos. Thalia Theatre in Lisbon was a runner-up for the prize, under the category of architecture. The presentation began with this project, moving onto other ventures of the studio such as an agitprop newspaper and a travelogue blog. The images, mostly in black-and-white, produced a “film noir” about current conditions of work in Portugal. The impact of social, economic, and political factors on design provided the punch line for this excruciatingly fast Pecha Kucha.
