This workshop took place in July 2014, gathering a roster of other tutors such as Jan De Vylder, Kersten Geers, and Tetsuo Kondo. Barbas Lopes Arquitectos conducted a studio titled after a novel by Michel Houellebecq, “The Possibility of an Island.” Students were asked to make proposals for a deserted island off the coast of Brazil. Organized in groups, they designed a series of elementary structures – an observatory, a lighthouse, a pier, a villa, a shelter, a reservoir, and a flyover – spread across the rough topography of the island. The studio fostered imagination as a gateway to this remote place, juxtaposed with objective data and decisions about it. This combination of two modes of thought, based on fantasy and reality, was key to the studio and its exploration of “terra incognita.”
